The story of this blog goes back to the late-90s, when I worked as a Show Writer at Walt Disney Imagineering. It was there I developed my passion for and understanding of the ways Disney's theme park designers tell stories through the use of detail. Later, my wife Laurel and I would often volunteer our time, conducting classes and tours of the parks for Cast Members via Disney University. As the years went on, increasing responsibilities at work and home (our twin boys were born in 2005) meant those tours happened less and less. In 2009, I made a resolution to leverage technology and emerging social media to offer virtual storytelling tours.

I put up my first post here March 9, 2009. Three years and 705 posts later, I have to admit I'm quite proud of the accomplishment and humbled by the audience it has attracted. I've heard from many of you in comments, e-mails, Tweets and in person. You've all been so gracious and provided me more motivation than you know to keep the content coming.

Alas, as they say, all good things must come to an end.

As we step into 2012, I find myself with exciting new challenges at work and an increasing desire at home to spend more of my available time with my family and capturing the memories of our twins' fleeting childhood.

The good news for fans of the blog is all the content will still be here, and much of it is evergreen. I invite you to explore the Topic links in the right side column. Go back and revisit a post or maybe even discover something you missed the first time around. I'll also still be fairly active on Twitter (@disneyshawn for me, @disneylaurel for my wonderful wife) and in Google+, so don't be a stranger!

I've dearly loved sharing my passion with you over the years, and it's my fondest hope you'll take these stories and share them with your friends and family. It's only through being told that tales aren't forgotten.

Slinky Dog and Hot Wheels

Continuing our exploration of Toy Story Playland at Walt Disney Studios Park, we come across Slinky Dog Zigzag Spin, a game Andy has left set up in his backyard box and all. The queue for the attraction winds through fences of Lincoln Logs and right into the box itself. On the side of the box, you'll notice a reference to James Industries. Richard James invented Slinky as a toy back in the '40s. Of course, it's also appropriate that James Varney provided the voice of Slinky Dog in the first two Toy Story movies (he passed in 2000, prior to production of Toy Story 3).

Once inside the box, you'll find all the game pieces and instructions needed to play the Zigzag Spin game.

For the attraction, though, we're going to leave the box behind and join Slink on a mad chase after his own tail. Rows of seats are built into the coils of the Slinky, all surrounding a dog bowl filled with treats. Once everyone's in place, it's time for the spinning fun to begin - round and round, over and down, faster and faster. Next thing you know, you'll have a big grin on your face, just like Slinky Dog!

Nearby is the feature attraction of Toy Story Playland, RC Racer! While the ride features the RC character from Toy Story, the setting here is very much about Andy's Hot Wheels cars. From the carrying case marquee to the molded-plastic sections of the queue, every detail is just right.

I love that several of the "decals" on the toy set, like the ones above, are peeling off just like they often did in real life. All the details in the queue are fantastic. I love the trees pruned to resemble traffic cones and the walkway, designed to look like snap-together sections of track.

There's a gas station playset (Dinoco, of course, the brand seen in all the Pixar films), and every element looks plastic and toy like.

The toy illusion continues as you enter the load building for the ride, where parts of our RC model car are seen still attached to the plastic frames on which they came.

The car assembled and a half-pipe of Hot Wheels orange track curved and waiting, it's time to board. RC rolls back and scoots forward, then he rolls back some more and scoots even further ahead. Before long, the car is zooming up and back, nearly to the ends of the track. It's actually quite thrilling and provides a great view of the park and a fine conclusion to our day at Walt Disney Studios.

A Backyard Playland

The newest area at Walt Disney Studios Park is Toy Story Playland, a mini-land located within the Toon Studio backlot. It's as if you've stepped onto the set of Toy Story and are in Andy's backyard amid all his playthings. From the Hot Wheels track and Tinker Toys to a Barrel of Monkeys and stacks of dominoes, many of your favorite toys from childhood are here and larger than life.

An enormous Buzz Lightyear stands over the entrance to Toy Story Playland, greeting Guests in both French and English as they arrive. Once inside the land, you'll find other familiar faces and elements from the Toy Story films, including the brightly-colored ball featured in the 1986 Pixar short "Luxo, Jr." and tucked into nearly every other Pixar production since.

Looking up, you'll discover an old-fashioned string of Christmas lights is used for illumination, while on the ground clever observers may notice the sneaker tread of Andy's footprints in the dirt.

At the other end of the land, the Barrel of Monkeys is cracked open and laying on the ground - one half housing a merchandise location, the other providing a tunnel transition back into the human-size section of the park.

Here in Toy Story Playland, though, everything is toy size, from the photo op with Rex to benches made from wooden train track pieces.

At the southern edge of the area, model airplanes of the balsa wood and plastic varieties signal the entrance to the first major attraction of Toy Story Playland, the Toy Soldiers Parachute Drop. Look closely at the model plane which forms the marquee, and you'll even notice the rubber band inside ready to be twisted to spin the propeller.

The Toy Soldiers (as they're known here; Green Army Men in the States) are on the case, ready to train new recruits on how to parachute into enemy territory... or at least into a houseplant to spy on Christmas and birthday presents.

Every element of the attraction is authentic to the films and supports the story that we're immersed in a toy world. The 2010 copyright date on the PlaySkool walkie-talkie is a nod to when Toy Story Playland opened (August 2010), and I especially love the fences in the queue, built to look like something you'd snap together with a Green Army Man play set.

There are bits of Hidden Disney to be found in the queue here as well. Fort Emery, the name of the post where we're doing our parachute training, is a nod to Pixar Animation Studios' hometown of Emeryville, California. The ID number on the Jeep in the outdoor area of the queue, 112295, is actually the date the original Toy Story opened in theaters (Nov. 22, 1995).

Toy Soldiers Parachute Drop is essentially the same kind of shoot-up-and-gently-drift-down ride found in countless amusement parks around the world. What makes this attraction unique and so much fun is the story being told through the details. Here, the load station is a Quonset hut, the landing zones are marked with Army stars and a plastic soldier keeps an eye on us from an observation tower. Parachuting our way through boot camp has never been so much fun!

A Taste of Radiator Springs

Opened in 2007 as part of the Toon Studio expansion that added Crush's Coaster to Walt Disney Studios Park, Cars Quatre Roues Rallye (Cars Race Rally) brings to life favorite elements from the 2006 Disney-Pixar animated film. Although a relatively small attraction, Cars Race Rally packs hundreds of details into this little corner of the park. From the "Welcome" sign, featuring placards for The Knights of Combustion and the Loyal Order of the Lugnuts, to the car part-influenced architecture, the town of Radiator Springs is well represented.

In a window near the entrance are some wildly painted hoods, fine examples of Ramone's handiwork at the House of Body Art, while Flo's V-8 Cafe provides a backdrop for the ride itself, housing the loading area of the queue.

Facades along the outside of the queue building include nods to Tow Mater Towing & Salvage and Luigi's Casa Della Tires. You'll even find Luigi and Guido posing for photos alongside their legendary Tower of Tires!

A peek inside the window at Luigi's reveals he's having a sale on Fettuccini Alfredo brand whitewall tires, available in such styles as Latte or Blanco Maximo. Of course, to truly appreciate the details at Cars Race Rally, you'll need to head inside... and hope for a line so you'll have time to pause and enjoy.

The first stop in the queue is Doc Hudson's place, now the Radiator Springs Doc Hudson Museum. Look for Doc's mechanical degrees from places of higher learning like the Institute of Ignition Studies and Pnorthern Pneumatic Polytechnic. There are also copies of newspaper articles, touting the Hudson Hornet's racing wins back in the '50s, and even one of his Piston Cups on display.

All your favorite Cars characters are represented here in some fashion, from Fillmore and Sarge to Red and Sally, and one entire section of the queue is dedicated to Lizzie's Radiator Springs Curios shop.

Some of the bumper stickers on offer here advertise local businesses, like the Cozy Cone Motel or Sarge's Surplus Hut, while others feature the sort of kitschy expressions you might find on products like this from a typical roadside souvenir stand:

"I'd Rather Be Cruisin'!"

"Got My Kicks"

"Nice Butte... Radiator Springs"

"Life Begins at the Off Ramp"

"Built for Comfort, Not for Speed"

"Honk If Your Horn Works"

"You Tailgate, I Backfire"

The attraction itself, set amid the mesas of Ornament Valley, is a triple turntable ride in which cars spin riders around and around, sliding from one turntable to the next (similar to Francis' Lady Bug Boogie at Disney California Adventure).

Cars Quatre Roues Rallye is lots of madcap, zany fun in very cute, Cars-inspired vehicles. Of course, the vehicles are a bit cozy, but I especially enjoyed the graphic (above) pointing out the fact that the cars are much happier carrying a mix of adults and children, rather than four full-grown passengers.

As the Race Rally gets underway, who's there to cheer us on but Lightning McQueen himself, along with his best friend Mater.

Before taking off for other points along Route 66, look for these fun little details from the movie: drums of Rust-eze Medicated Bumper Ointment and Mater's A-113 license plate (a reference to the animation classroom at Cal Arts where John Lasseter and others learned their craft).

Into the Big Blue

Heading deeper into Toon Studio, we approach the largest structure in this part of the lot, Studio 5, where we'll be shooting scenes from Finding Nemo on Crush's Coaster. The Crush man is even out front to greet us and to help make sure the littlest dudes don't get in - The EAC could be a little too much for kids less than 1.07 meters tall!

The outdoor queue begins to set the scene, with props and signs from the film waiting to be loaded into the stage for the next shoot. The references are to Finding Nemo, but also foreshadow some of the action of the ride we're about to experience.

On the set, we find ourselves completely immersed in the world of the 2003 Pixar film. There are even the seagulls with their call of "Mine. Mine. Mine," which have become a staple of Disney's Finding Nemo-inspired attractions around the world.

Today's scene takes place in the Big Blue and along the East Australian Current, so we first need to "suit up" aboard our own turtle shells. Once secured, we're off for a quick run outside the soundstage before diving into the current.

Crush's Coaster actually begins at a fairly slow pace, reminiscent of a dark ride, with scenes similar to those found on Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage at Disneyland or The Seas with Nemo and Friends at Epcot. We see Mr. Ray's class, the sharks, the anglerfish and the jellies, all before jumping into the EAC for a wild, spinning ride.

Crush's Coaster is a blast - we rode it three times on our recent visit! Of course, it's also one of the most popular attractions at Walt Disney Studios Park and one of the longest lines. My tip: Get to the park at least 30 minutes before opening and make a bee-line for this one!

High Flying Action

Today, there are 11 Disney Parks around the world (with #12 on the way). It only makes economic sense that some attractions would be repeated in more than one location. Part of the fun in visiting each park is seeing how those attractions are interpreted from place to place.

The Magic Carpets of Aladdin was added to Adventureland at the Magic Kingdom Park in May 2001, set in the middle of an exotic marketplace. A duplicate of the attraction was built at the same time for inclusion on the opening day menu at Walt Disney Studios Park in March 2002. Here, though, the story is very different. Instead of actually being in Agrabah, we find ourselves cast as extras in a production of "Tapis Volants: Flying Carpets over Agrabah."

The original "rug man" is standing by, waiting for his scene, so you can slip him some tassel or just pose for a fan photo. Once in the queue, we wind behind the scenes to discover all manner of props and set pieces ready to be called into service for the film.

Next thing you know, we're on the set. A painted cyclorama provides the backdrop for our scene, depicting the setting sun and approaching night over Agrabah. We're given a few instructions (and an opportunity to adjust hair and make-up), and then we're off - flying high above the city. Looking to the right and focusing on the painting as you fly by is surprisingly effective at creating an illusion of being "inside" the animated film. It's almost enough to make you burst out with a chorus of "A Whole New World!"

Of course, the Genie's there, too. Sure, he's spent 10,000 years trapped in a lamp making people's wishes come true, but what he really wants to do is direct! As we fly around and around and up and down, Genie sits atop his perch shouting direction: "Higher! Faster! There you go... You look FABULOUS! And... Cut!"

Lights, Camera... Toons!

At the other end of Production Courtyard from the action-packed Backlot is the largest area of Walt Disney Studios Park, Toon Studio. This is the place where Disney animated films are brought to life and your favorite characters can be found on the lot, shooting iconic scenes from the movies or just greeting their fans.

One of the original attractions here is the Art of Disney Animation, a Streamline Moderne-styled building capped off with a giant Sorcerer's Hat. Visitors to Walt Disney World might recognize the golden statues of Peter Pan, Wendy Darling and Tinker Bell flying around the hat. They graced the turrets of Cinderella Castle at the Magic Kingdom during the "Happiest Celebration on Earth" event in 2005 and were moved here afterward.

Other statuary nearby pays homage to Disney animated creations both classic and contemporary, from Fantasia's Bacchus and Jacchus (1940) to the title character of 1999's Tarzan.

Inside, the Art of Disney Animation experience is similar to the interactive exhibits found at Disney California Adventure and Disney's Hollywood Studios. There's even an Animation Academy (using assets from the now-defunct Chicago DisneyQuest location), where Guests can learn how to draw a favorite character.

Across the plaza from Art of Disney Animation is the Studio 3 Theatre, home to the live entertainment spectacle "Animagique." The "Animagique" show opens with Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck working in an animation studio. Mickey warns Donald (and us) not to open a door at the far end of the studio. As soon as Mickey steps out, though, guess what happens. Donald finds himself sucked into the Disney film vault for wild, musical encounters with characters and "black light" sequences from The Jungle Book, The Lion King, Dumbo and The Little Mermaid, all before Mickey returns to save the day.

Outside Studio 3, we find a bit of a set from the Disney-Pixar film Monsters, Inc. Mike Wazowski is standing alongside Boo's door, ready for his close-up. From time to time, even big blue James P. Sullivan stops by for some photos and hugs. What's great, though, is there are so many fun details and things to see in this little corner, Guests are entertained even when the characters aren't around.

This security gate is where toons from Hollywood or nearby Toontown check in to go to work on the lot. It also marks something of a delineation between the production facilities of Toon Studio and the Toon Backlot area, where outdoor sets can be found from films like Cars and Toy Story.

Get Your Moteurs Running

By far the largest, most complex attraction at Walt Disney Studios Park has to be Moteurs... Action! Stunt Show Spectacular. This Paris original, since exported to Disney's Hollywood Studios in the form of Lights! Motors! Action! Extreme Stunt Show, brings to life the high octane thrill of seeing precision vehicle stunts executed on an enormous outdoor movie set.

Approaching the stadium for the show, the audience is treated to a look inside the real garage where the stunt vehicles are carefully maintained, as well as a view of the not-so-real (although very realistic looking) production equipment being unloaded for the day's shoot.

Those familiar with the Florida version of the show would find this iteration nearly identical, with the exception of The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror looming in the background and a heavier dose of French language. The park even introduced Lightning McQueen (here known as Flash McQueen) into the show earlier this year, just as he was at Walt Disney World.

As similar as the experience is, though, what I always appreciate most are the subtle differences. We arrived at the stadium as the show was beginning, but while other Guests hurried to their seats, my eye was drawn to the restrooms. More specifically, I was intrigued by the restroom signs, a Disney Parks detail for which I have an unhealthy obsession. The ones at Moteurs... Action! Stunt Show Spectacular, designed to look like dashboard gauges, did not disappoint.

Located near the exit of the stunt show is Cafe des Cascadeurs (Stuntman Cafe), the only full table service restaurant in the park (Restaurant des Stars, where Chef Remy appears, is the fanciest establishment, but operates as a buffet). Designed to look like a mid-century American diner, Cafe des Cascadeurs serves traditional fair, from hot dogs to hamburgers.

The restaurant also serves up a cool photo op with this motorcycle and sidecar parked out front. It's a great place for some storytelling props, as well as a word from the location's presenting sponsor, Coca-Cola. As the plaque on the side of the cart says about that frosty, delicious beverage: "It keeps a cool head in the heat of the moment!" Sounds perfect, whether you're performing stunts or just spending a day touring the studio.

Rockin' & Rollin'

Continuing the run of adrenaline-fueled attractions on the Backlot at Walt Disney Studios Park is Rock 'N' Roller Coaster avec Aerosmith. Although similar in some ways to its Disney's Hollywood Studios counterpart, this iteration of the ride presents a completely original story line and experience.

Both coasters start out in a recording studio and carry passengers on wild rides set to the music of Aerosmith, but since this version is set on a studio lot in France, a trip through Hollywood to see the band in concert at the Forum just wouldn't have made sense. Instead, the conceit is that Aerosmith and the record company have developed a new, interactive technology that we'll get to experience during the production of a music video.

Rock 'N' Roller Coaster here is sponsored by Gibson, and guitars feature heavily in the design, from the giant billboard on the front of the recording studio promoting the experience to this creative approach to the typical height measurement sign:

Once we've been granted clearance, we're on our way into the studios of Tour de Force Records to be prepped for today's shoot.

Inside, we pass an impressive collection of autographed guitars, drum skins and gold records from music legends the likes of U2, KISS and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

In the studio for our meeting with the band, frontman Steven Tyler stands over a model of the twisting mass of trusses and rigging we're about to tackle, explaining what's going to go down in the shooting of this new kind of music video. Next thing you know, we're heading out back to the sound lab, where a sleek 24-passenger Soundtracker slides up between stacks of speakers and mixing boards.

We take our seats, brace ourselves and prepare to launch into a light and sound experience like no other. Throughout the ride, concert-style lighting and smoke effects combine with the on-board audio system, presenting a different show for each of the five possible music combinations (each train plays different Aerosmith songs).

As we come in for a landing, Aerosmith thanks us for helping them make history, shooting the first music video with the amazing Soundtracker system.

Dining Like the Stars

As I mentioned in an earlier post, much of the food service available at Walt Disney Studios Park comes from stands and trucks positioned around the lot as if they were Craft Services or Catering at a working studio. There are two exceptions, however.

Restaurant des Stars, on the border between Production Courtyard and the Backlot, is an Art Deco homage to the studio commissaries of yore. This is the place where producers, agents, movie stars and studio executives would all meet to mingle and nosh during the lunch hour. The photographs on the wall depict some of the greats of Hollywood and European cinema who have frequented this establishment. Among them are none other than French culinary impresario August Gusteau and those brothers in fine dining, Remy and Emile, from the Disney-Pixar film Ratatouille.

These days, it seems Chef Remy is working the kitchen at Restaurant des Stars. From time to time, he even wanders into the dining room with one of his sous chefs, to see how the Guests are enjoying everything he's prepared.

On a personal note, I have never managed to see Remy in his appearances at Les Chefs de France at Epcot, but I rather enjoyed the fact that my first encounter with him was in an actual restaurant in actual France!

Of course, should Guests of Restaurant des Stars miss their opportunity to see and get a photograph with Remy, they can always pose with the little chef at this cute photo op just outside.

Moving out onto the Backlot, we come to Blockbuster Cafe, another example of dining the movie studio way. In this case, it's as though we're part of a huge cast shooting on the lot, where catering is brought to us for a lunch break on and around the set.

The environs surrounding Blockbuster Cafe include sets from popular films, such as The Chronicles of Narnia (above) and Les Parapluies de Cherbourg (The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, below), an award-winning French film from 1964 starring Catherine Deneuve.

Where things get really interesting, though, is inside the warehouse-style building of the Blockbuster Cafe. The loading dock at the side of the building is where the enormous sets are brought in for productions, and at the moment two major films are sharing the space: Pirates of the Caribbean and High School Musical.

No, that was not a typo. The interior decor of Blockbuster Cafe is divided between the two major film franchises. The ordering area and one of the dining rooms is the East High gymnasium set from High School Musical. There are pep rally banners, lockers, trophy cases and even a couple basketball hoops. You half expect Zac Efron to come running up for a slam dunk!

Meanwhile, the dining rooms on the opposite side of the building belong to a completely different production. Here, you can dine on the deck of the Black Pearl and admire some of the actual costumes used in the making of the Pirates of the Caribbean films. Don't spend too long eating, though. Lunch break will be over soon, and then it's on with the show!

It's the End of the World As We Know It

Positioned right at the entrance to the Backlot from Production Courtyard is Studio 7, housing the special effects workshop and shooting stages of Walt Disney Studios Park, and it's clear that today's demonstration of "Les Effets Speciaux" will center on scenes from the 1998 blockbuster film Armageddon. The Michael Bay-directed Armageddon, produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and released by Disney's Touchstone Pictures division, became an international hit grossing more than half a billion dollars. In fact, the movie did even better abroad than it did in the States, so it's no surprise to see it featured here.

Positioned just outside Studio 7 is one of the full-scale Armadillo vehicles built for Armageddon. It's an impressive prop and a pleasure to see it here (as opposed to the Boneyard of the Studio Tram Tour), where you can spend time appreciating it in detail.

The Armadillo definitely adds some testosterone to this corner of the park. Of course, just as it would be in a real studio, the aesthetic of the Backlot is very utilitarian, with exposed pipes and steel and plenty of equipment around.

From the grip truck parked in the street to the action genre movie posters used on the light & sound towers, it's an area of Walt Disney Studios Park that, by design, is heavy on edge and light on Pixie Dust. There are still plenty of Disney touches, though. Just take a look at the license plate on that truck: WED 1901 (for Walter Elias Disney, born in 1901).

There are also some really cool props to be found on the Backlot. Appropriately standing outside the special effects stage is this giant wind machine.

Getting back to the attraction, Armageddon: Les Effets Speciaux is positioned at the entrance to the Backlot, just beyond the security gates. According to the story, there's production taking place inside Studio 7 today, so it's a Hot Set. As we'll soon learn, that designation on the barriers delineating the queue has more than one meaning.

We head past the podium and toward the building, where signs warn unauthorized personnel of the dangers inherent with the sort of special effects being used on set today.

Luckily, we've been deemed honorary members of the Special Effects Crew, so we're granted access. We gather in a small room to be introduced to the story of Armageddon and our role in the upcoming scene. One of the stars of the film, Michael Clarke Duncan, even "stops by" to give us some encouragement.

With that, we're off to either Stage 7-A or 7-B (the same show is mirrored on each stage for added attraction capacity), where we find ourselves on the set of the Russian space station from one of the action sequences in the movie. Windows open onto a view of outer space, and when the director calls "Action!" we're suddenly thrust into the middle of the meteor storm.

Meteorites begin hitting the station. Lights flicker. Pipes burst, sending clouds of gas into the room. Flames erupt, closer and hotter than you can imagine would be safe. Ultimately, a vacuum opens into space, and everything gets sealed and shut down just as we hear, "Cut!"

Armageddon: Les Effets Speciaux is an intense experience, thrusting Guests into the middle of some of the real special and physical effects used in the making of this action movie extravaganza.

The Production Courtyard

The remainder of Production Courtyard at Walt Disney Studios Park consists of soundstages and other production-style facilities, including the Studio Theater where screenings might be hosted. This is home to CineMagique, another attraction unique to the Paris park - and one of its best.

CineMagique begins as a film tribute to many of the greatest movies in cinema history. A short while in, however, someone's cell phone starts ringing. The offending Guest stands to take the call and is soon being chased down by Security. He runs on stage and right into the screen! At this point, we see the "Guest" is none other than Martin Short, who ends up on a madcap adventure through classic movie scenes. He even falls in love along the way. CineMagique lives up to its name: It's pure cinema magic!

Scattered throughout Production Courtyard are Studio Catering wagons and other equipment waiting to be pressed into service with some production shooting on the lot. Like a real studio, though, Walt Disney Studios isn't just for movie making. There's also television production... or at least, there was.

Early in the park's history, this Art Deco structure housed Walt Disney Television Studios, the one spot where Guests could see real production taking place. A tour, hosted on video by an animated Buzz Lightyear, took groups past the various facilities, including the building's four stages. If you were lucky, you could have even caught an actual taping of "Zapping Zone," a popular show on Disney Channel France.

The TV tour was less successful than the designers of the park had originally hoped. Attempts to boost interest included adding the Cyberspace Mountain simulators from DisneyQuest Chicago to the post-show area of the tour, but eventually the attraction was shuttered.

In its place today, Guests can instead participate in live shows designed to feel like you're on the set of some children's TV programs. With Playhouse Disney - Live on Stage! and Stitch LIVE! (an experience similar to Turtle Talk with Crush), young Guests find this corner of Walt Disney Studios Park particularly entertaining. With the multiple languages spoken at Disneyland Resort Paris, the versions of these shows presented here are presented in several versions. Take a look a the reader boards on each marquee, and you'll see they advertise just when the next show in your language will be playing.

Winding through Production Courtyard from one end to the other is a virtual walkway of film history. The pavement is designed to look like a filmstrip, with Mickey patterns in the sprocket holes. Along the way are a series of tributes, ranging from movie and TV posters adorning sound and lighting towers to homages to some of the greatest contributors to cinema.

Some of the celebrities present for the park's opening back in 2002 have left their handprints in cement, similar to Grauman's Chinese Theater in Hollywood. Here, you'll find stars both from Europe (Angela Lansbury and 3rd 007 Roger Moore) as well as those who are inexplicably popular in Europe (David Hasselhoff is HUGE in Germany).

The name Remy Julienne may not be particularly well known, but his work is. As a stunt coordinator, Julienne contributed to some of the biggest action scenes in films from the James Bond series to The Da Vinci Code. He was also chief consultant in the development of Moteurs... Action! Stunt Spectacular for the Walt Disney Studios Park.

Of course, the movies wouldn't be what they are today with the contributions of a few folks with the surname "Disney." Roy E. Disney, Walt's nephew and a producer on films including the True-Life Adventures, was in attendance at the opening of the park.

Nearby, a plaque honors Roy's father and uncle, commenting without understatement that "They changed the face of entertainment and virtually created the genre of the animated feature film."

Several of these plaques in Production Courtyard pay homage to the true visionaries of motion pictures... and they're not all Hollywood names. Appropriately positioned near the Special Effects building on the Backlot, at the foot of Rue Georges Méliès, is a plaque honoring the Parisian stage magician who is credited with discovering techniques such as stop motion, slow motion, dissolves, fade-outs and superimposition.

Welcome "Behind the Scenes"

At the end of Hollywood Boulevard, like a gate leading into the Hollywood Hills beyond, is the entrance to the Studio Tram Tour, one of the featured attractions of Walt Disney Studios Park. While Walt Disney Studios in Paris was never intended to be a real, functioning movie studio, the attraction still does an effective job of providing Guests a "behind the scenes" look at motion picture and television production.

The queue winds past large-scale movie props, like this car driven by Glenn Close as Cruella de Vil in the live action 102 Dalmatians, and then it's on to the tour tram. Similar to the shuttles used for the Studio Backlot Tour at Disney's Hollywood Studios, the key difference here is these tram cars are each outfitted with a high-definition flat screen.

The screens are used to deliver the narration for the tour, courtesy of actors Jeremy Irons, speaking English, and Irene Jacob, speaking in French. Apart from the dose of celebrity provided, the screens are also effective at showcasing how some of the sets and props seen on the tour were used in their respective productions.

After an introduction, the tour proceeds past the first of two "Boneyards," areas on a studio lot where vehicles and props from past productions are left until they might be needed again. Among the items seen along the Paris route are this large-scale model of one of the shuttles from Armageddon and some animatronics used in the production of the live action elements of Disney's Dinosaur.

Next, it's on to a large, outdoor set from the TV series "Dinotopia," which was actually more popular in Europe than it was in the U.S. The area is completely decked out with all the necessary equipment to give the impression that this is an actual "hot set."

While the crew shooting "Dinotopia" might be MIA, there's definitely some activity happening on the next set up ahead: Catastrophe Canyon. Although it's essentially a duplicate of the attraction in Florida, what this version of Catastrophe Canyon does better is to create the illusion of a modern, working set.

Once on the set, the show is the same, complete with simulations of rain, an earthquake, explosions and a flash flood.

Leaving Catastrophe Canyon behind, our guides on screen begin to discuss the Studio's Wardrobe department, a holdover from the days when the trams actually drove alongside the open windows of the Costuming building. With the recent addition of Toy Story Playland, however, the route was changed, removing that element from the tour.

Next, though, it's on to the Studio Motorpool, a collection of classic cars used in everything from Pearl Harbor to Reign of Fire.

Reign of Fire, a futuristic action film about a flock of dragons who emerge from the earth to wreak havoc on London and the world, opened in 2002 shortly after Walt Disney Studios Park made its debut. The movie was, no doubt, expected to be a blockbuster (alas, it was not), so sets from the film were recreated on the lot of the new studio park.

Our tour tram enters the London street set, littered with debris from battles with the dragons. We pause briefly outside an Underground Station, only to be surprised with a burst of fiery dragon breath so close and hot it'll singe your eyebrows.

The tour takes one more turn alongside the backstage prep areas for Moteurs... Action! Stunt Spectacular, before returning to the station for us to continue exploring Walt Disney Studios Park on foot.

Hollywood Boulevard

Once through Disney Studio 1, the Hollywood set continues in a much more realistic fashion, with Hollywood Boulevard on the studio lot. Between the two is a small park, at the center of which stands a copy of "Partners," the statue of Walt Disney and Mickey Mouse crafted by Blaine Gibson. You'll also find a copy of the dedication of Walt Disney Studios Park, opened by then-CEO Michael Eisner on March 12, 2002:

To all who enter this studio of dreams... welcome.
Walt Disney Studios is dedicated to our timeless fascination and affection for cinema and television. Here we celebrate the art and the artistry of storytellers from Europe and around the world who create the magic. May this special place stir our own memories of the past, and our dreams of the future.

The Hollywood Boulevard sets use an illusion of forced perspective to give the impression the buildings are taller and the street longer than they are. Seen from the point of view of Disney Studio 1, Hollywood Blvd. seems to go on for miles, all the way to the famous Hollywood sign. In reality, it's merely a handful of carefully-placed facades.

Each facade, though, is a work of art unto itself, dressed out with props and exterior details that complete the illusion. Whether it's the Deluxe Talent Agency (where hopeful starlets might go to get discovered) or Gower Books & Music (which takes its name from Gower Street in Hollywood), these look like real businesses you can step right into.

Ready for your close-up? Be sure to visit DeMille Studio for professional headshots! (Cecil B. DeMille was not only one of the greatest directors in old Hollywood, but also the subject of Norma Desmond's famous line in the film Sunset Boulevard: "Mr. DeMille, I'm ready for my close-up."

There's the well-traveled intersection of Hollywood and Vine, and nearby... Hollywood & Lime, a refreshing drink and snack station sponsored by Perrier. Typical of what would be found on a real movie studio lot, much of the food service at Walt Disney Studios Park is handled by food trucks and carts like this, all in the guise of Studio Catering.

The entire Hollywood Blvd. area of Walt Disney Studios was added to the park in 2007, both as a placemaking enhancement and to support the addition of the park's newest attraction, The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror.

A near duplicate of the Tower of Terror attraction built at Disney California Adventure, Guests in the Paris park are taken beyond the old Hollywood sets and placed right in the middle of the action in their very own episode of "The Twilight Zone."

On the Lot & On the Set

The entrance area of Walt Disney Studios Park is the Front Lot, inspired by the classic movie studio lots of Hollywood's golden age. All the key elements are here: iconic studio gate, production soundstages, looming water tower... with mouse ears!

The warm colors and rich details of the Front Lot present a welcoming face to the park. Art Deco details combine with subtle hints of Mickey Mouse to make this studio uniquely Disney, while the stars and searchlight pattern incorporated into the courtyard and gateway evoke a feeling of glitz and glamour from old Hollywood.

Inside the gates is La Place des Frères Lumière, a plaza area dedicated to the early European innovators of Cinema. Their tributes circle the plaza, culminating in the Fantasia Fountain at the center, honoring Walt Disney's 1940 cinematic triumph.

Surrounding La Place des Frères Lumière are all the typical theme park main entrance services, including The Walt Disney Studios Store. The entrance of the store is dressed as though it's hosting a premiere, complete with red (tile) carpet, covered entry for celebrity arrivals and even Disney royalty in their couture gowns. Some of Disney's greatest movie stars also make appearances here to meet their fans.

Inside, the walls of Walt Disney Studios Store are adorned with photographs from the early days of the actual Walt Disney Studios, like this shot of the lot at 2719 Hyperion Avenue where Mickey Mouse, Silly Symphonies and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs were animated.

The biggest structure on the lot is Disney Studio 1, a massive soundstage through which Guests pass to reach the rest of Walt Disney Studios Park. Step inside, and you'll find yourself on the set of an elaborate production entitled, "Lights, Camera, Hollywood!"

The plywood backing of the sets is stamped with logos for both the studio and the production. Step through to the other side, and you'll discover a movie set recreation of a fantasy Hollywood that serves as the de facto Main Street for the park.

Several of the iconic locations of old Hollywood are here, from the Brown Derby to Schwab's Pharmacy. Other facades look familiar, but are graced with names unique to the park. Fans of Disney's Hollywood Studios might recognize Crossroads of the World (here called The Gossip Column) and Oscar's Super Service Station (dubbed Last Chance Gas - with none other than Herbie the Love Bug on the lift in the station's garage).

Beyond the facades, the entire left side of Disney Studio 1 is a merchandise location, with a food court facility taking up the right side of the building. The store is set up as a prop shop, with fixtures designed as rolling racks to move items to and from the set. I particularly enjoyed this section, filled with amazingly detailed Egyptian props and set pieces.

The food court side of Disney Studio 1 is comprised of a collection of facades presenting a fun, kitschy side of Hollywood, with place names like Gunga Den, Carmen's Veranda, Swankadero and the Hep Cat Club.

There's even a Tiki lounge, a staple of Hollywood in the '50s and '60s. In case you got caught up in the illusion of "Lights, Camera, Hollywood!" though, reaching the opposite end of Disney Studio 1 reminds you that you're really on a movie set. A camera crane looms over the exit doors, capped with a mural of the Hollywood hills. It may be a wrap for this section of the park, but our Walt Disney Studios Park adventure is just beginning.

Lumières... Caméra... Action!

Added to Disneyland Resort Paris in March 2002, Walt Disney Studios Park was built to serve the purpose of extending the length of stay of Guests visiting the resort. Unfortunately, since it was born during a period of financial difficulty for Disneyland Paris, the park opened as one of the smallest and most sparsely detailed of any Disney Park in the world. Through the course of its first decade, though, the park has been expanded and enhanced, and today, Walt Disney Studios Park offers a full day of Disney-quality fun.

Unlike Disney's Hollywood Studios in Florida, Walt Disney Studios Park was never truly intended to be a working production facility (with the minor exception of some TV shows shot here in the early days). The setting for the park, however, is that of a studio lot where Guests find themselves "on the set" of favorite movies, TV shows and even a music video.

The park is divided into four key sections (be sure to expand the map above for a closer look):

Front Lot - This is the main entrance of the park, with all the expected services and shopping opportunities. It's also where you'll find Studio 1, essentially an indoor Main Street.

Production Courtyard - This is where Guests can go behind the scenes (on the Studio Tram Tour), join a studio audience (for Playhouse Disney - Live on Stage!), drop in on the action (at The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror) or literally become immersed in the world of the movies (via the unique attraction Cinémagique).

Backlot - Where Production Courtyard focused on classic Hollywood and children's television, the Backlot area of the park amps up the adrenaline with attractions that bring to life high octane action (at Moteurs... Action! Stunt Show Spectacular), rock video excitement (on Rock 'n' Roller Coaster avec Aerosmith) and intense special effects (on the set of Armageddon).

Toon Studio - The site of the greatest expansion of the park, Toon Studio invites Guests to see how cartoons are made - both the real story (inside Art of Disney Animation) and the fantasy (on the "sets" of everything from Aladdin and Finding Nemo to Cars and Toy Story).

Staying in the Wild, Wild West

Finishing our tour of the hotels of Disneyland Paris, let's stroll down the Rio Grande (the name given the canal which runs from Lake Disney) toward the French equivalent of the moderate resorts, Hotel Cheyenne and Hotel Santa Fe.

The second property designed by architect Robert Stern, Hotel Cheyenne offers Guests the opportunity to stay in a western frontier town, albeit one more inspired by films like High Noon than based in reality.

A stagecoach has pulled up out front to deliver folks and freight, and look who stopped by, in full Native American garb no less. Apart from being a fantastic outfit for Mickey and a great location for photos, this spot also provided me one of the most unforgettable moments of my trip to Disneyland Paris.

Guests visit the French park from all over Europe, and you can hear many different languages spoken here. It becomes abundantly clear that, while I may have grown up with Mickey and the gang in the States, he doesn't belong to us. He belongs to the world, and the magic of Disney transcends language and culture. As my wife and I stood, watching Mickey greet these children, an Italian family was dropped off nearby. Obviously at the start of their vacation, they rushed over, excited to see the Big Cheese. No one in that family was more thrilled than the father, who shouted an enthusiastic, "Topolino! Ciao!" (Topolino is the Italian name for Mickey Mouse) It was at once funny and endearing, and I will remember the wonder and delight in that grown man's voice for as long as I live.

Inside the public space of the Hotel Cheyenne are references both direct and indirect to the Westerns of the past, both Hollywood and "Spaghetti" (Spaghetti Westerns, also known as "western all'italiana," were popular in the mid-60s and shot in Italy by directors like Sergio Leone).

The lobby includes sculptures by Remington, and the primary dining facility is the Chuck Wagon Cafe, where grub is served up from the wagons and the cookhouse (although all indoors).

Among my favorite details is this mailbox, designed as a Pony Express satchel. Even better, step outside, and you'll find actual ponies! As they say, this "ain't no one horse town."

The lodging buildings of the hotel are arranged along a grid of western-style, packed dirt streets, with facades broken up to appear like a string of buildings one might find in an old west town (or at least on an old west movie set). Even the names of the buildings and streets help support the story. That's the Doc Holliday building in the second photo below, along East Desperado Street.

Out at the edge of town near the river is the hotel's play area for children, Fort Apache, where kids can let their imagination run wild playing in the fort or the nearby Indian encampment.

Cross the Rio Grande, and you'll find yourself in a western environment of a completely different kind. Hotel Santa Fe, as designed by New Mexico's own Antoine Predock, is an homage to the desert areas of the west, as well as the famous Route 66.

The front entrance of the hotel is designed as a drive-in movie theater, with the spaces in the parking lot arranged to position the cars facing the screen. When the resort opened in 1992, the image on screen was that of Clint Eastwood, but that was changed to a scene from Cars after that film debuted in 2006.

The interiors of Hotel Santa Fe lean heavily on both Route 66 and Native American designs, contrasting the natural hues of the architecture with bright, vibrant colors. The collection of Native American folk art figures behind the front desk of the hotel is particularly impressive.

Just outside the public buildings of the resort is a long mural of Route 66, running from Chicago (Walt Disney's birthplace) to Los Angeles. Along the way are nods to Walt, including Marceline, Missouri (where he spent his childhood), and Disneyland in California.

The lodging structures at Hotel Santa Fe take their cue from the adobe dwellings of Arizona and Utah, with landscaping heavy on cactus and stone.

Connecting the buildings and other facilities of the resort is a series of themed trails. Although quite a bit more esoteric than the movie-inspired sections of Hotel Cheyenne, the trails offer their own unique elements.

The Trail of Monuments is intended as an abstract representation of Monument Valley in Utah (the inspiration for the rockwork at Big Thunder Mountain Railroad). Upon opening, buildings along the Trail of Legends were painted in colors symbolic of key elements of a western town (silver for the bank, gray for the prison, red for the house of ill repute, etc.), but these colors have since been replaced with warmer tones.

The Trail of Water includes aquatic elements like a viaduct, pond and fountain. Along the Trail of Artifacts, you can find rusty old cars, a statue of a rattlesnake and a neon roadrunner. Finally, the Trail of Infinite Space is seen as a long highway with a line of telephone poles that seem to go forever. This trail features, among other things, a crash-landed UFO - a bit of Area 51, right here at Disneyland Resort Paris.

From the Forest to the Shore

Continuing our stroll around Lake Disney at Disneyland Resort Paris, we come upon the remaining two deluxe properties, Sequoia Lodge and Newport Bay Club. The Sequoia Lodge, as designed by French architect Antoine Grumbach, recalls America's national parks as well as the familiar architectural styles of Green & Green and Frank Lloyd Wright.

Similar in some ways to the Wilderness Lodge at Walt Disney World, Sequoia Lodge is distinct in that the main building does not include a cavernous lobby area. It's spaces are much more intimate, with several of the rooms grouped into separate lodge buildings, giving the overall resort a more manageable scale.

Sequoia Lodge was undergoing a significant refurbishment during my visit, but portions of the interior were open for Guests. The spaces are dominated by natural elements of wood, stone and copper, with seating areas grouped around crackling fireplaces and towering trees shading the windows from the sun.

The hotels at Disneyland Resort Paris offer many of the same perks as those at other Disney properties (such as early park admission), but there are other benefits to staying on property in France. All resort Guests receive complimentary breakfast in a hotel restaurant every day of your stay (go early!), and Disney characters stop by the resorts in the morning, wearing special attire unique to the theme of each property. Here's Goofy as a park ranger, inside the lobby of the Sequoia Lodge!

Down at the other end of the lake is Newport Bay Club, architect Robert Stern's contribution to the Parisian resort. If it looks similar to Disney's Yacht and Beach Club Resorts in Florida, that's no surprise. Stern designed those, too!

Here, the Newport Bay Club is an immense property, with over 1000 rooms. To help break up that mass and provide a more comfortable scale for Guests, the hotel was designed with long wings, oversize porches and pillars, gently sloping roof lines and an appropriately-placed lighthouse.

Newport Bay Club is reminiscent of New England hotels of the late 1800s and is filled with nautical details and references, set against a background of crisp whites, blues and hardwoods. It's truly beautiful inside.

Newport Bay Club is the resort where we stayed during our May 2011 visit, and it was fantastic. The hotel is a healthy walking distance from the theme parks, close enough to feel part of the action but far enough away to be in a world of its own.

Since Disney's Yacht Club Resort is one of my favorite properties at Walt Disney World, staying at Newport Bay Club felt a bit like coming home at the end of each day. There were definitely those little reminders, though, that we weren't in Orlando. Take that letter "C" on the left side of the sink faucet in the bathroom. At first you might think they've just swapped the hot and cold sides... until you realize the French word for hot is "chaud" (by the way, the letter on the other knob is "F" for "froid" - French for cold).

Then, of course, you look out the window and find a view you can't get anywhere else. That's Hotel New York across the lake and Panoramagique in the air. We could also peek to the left and see Disney Village and a bit of the Disneyland Paris park itself.

An interesting note: Robert Stern's Yacht and Beach Club Resorts also happen to offer views across a lake of structures designed by Michael Graves, who did Hotel New York. In Florida, it's his Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Hotels.

Start Spreadin' the News

The hotels of Disneyland Resort Paris bring a bit of Americana to the Parisian countryside in the form of sophisticated architectural statements. We've previously explored the Disneyland Hotel, at the entrance to the park, with a design somewhat reminiscent of Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa at Walt Disney World. At the opposite end of Disney Village, though, is a property completely unique to the Paris resort - Hotel New York.

Designed by noted architect Michael Graves, Hotel New York is a loving tribute to the "city that doesn't sleep," complete with abstract skyscrapers and a Rockefeller Plaza-like ice skating rink (and yes, those are Big Apples incorporated into the barrier surrounding the ice in the photo above).

Step inside Hotel New York, and you'll find yourself in a space that is at once classic Art Deco as well as ultra-modern, done in a distinctive Michael Graves style.

The hotel includes quite a few nods to aspects, landmarks and neighborhoods of New York, NY.

For all the reverence shown the Big Apple, Graves also had a bit of fun with his design, like with these nods to New York teams playfully positioned in a face-off at either end of a main corridor on the ground floor of the hotel. Of course, with great restaurants and shops on each side, everyone's a winner in this Subway Series!

There are also some nods to Disney history. This children's area off the main lobby is inspired by the film Who Framed Roger Rabbit? The skyscrapers and yellow cab seem a natural fit. I guess the designers forgot that movie took place in Los Angeles.

Probably my favorite discovery from wandering the halls of Hotel New York was a set of reproductions of art from the 1939 New York World's Fair. The art complements the Art Deco styling of parts of the hotel, but it also represents a subtle connection to Disney. Walt visited the 1939 fair, where the Trylon and Perisphere and theme of the World of Tomorrow would heavily influence some of his later efforts in theme park and civic design. The 1939 fair was also held at Flushing Meadows, the same location where Walt would return in 1964 with influential exhibits and attractions of his own.

Go (Wild) West

Since opening in 1992, the anchor attraction of Disney Village at Disneyland Resort Paris has been Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show, a dining and entertainment spectacular inspired by the real exposition William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody toured through Europe from 1889-1906.

Thanks to a partnership with the Buffalo Bill Museum in Colorado, the lobby of the theater is packed with posters, photographs and artifacts recalling Cody's time in Europe. The exhibit focuses particularly on the period of April to June, 1905, when Buffalo Bill's Wild West and Congress of Rough Riders of the World (the original show's full title) played the Champ de Mars in Paris.

Photographs of the massive show and some of the tour's more famous guest stars (like Sitting Bull, below) help ground the Disney Village attraction in reality and provide a true sense of history. This is no mere rodeo. You're about to experience a reenactment of events that happened here more than a century ago.

Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show isn't all history lesson, though. It's also loads of fun. On the way in to your arena-side seat, be sure to grab a cowboy hat. These keepsakes come with colored bands that (in typical dinner show fashion) separate sections of the audience into teams.

As you tuck into the chili, cornbread and ribs, the lights go down for the show to begin. Buffalo Bill himself rides center stage to address the crowd and get things going, bringing to life a highly-authentic demonstration of elements of life in the old west.

Apart from the competition sequences which involve plenty of audience participation, the show also features segments recreating the Pony Express, and Indian attack and a stagecoach robbery. The cast, both human and animal, has been brought to Paris from the United States and includes skilled rodeo cowboys, Native Americans, horses, longhorn cattle and (most impressive of all) a thundering herd of real bison.

The show is at once both reverent and funny, stunning and "down home." In 2009, as a way to reinvigorate the show and inspire repeat visitation, Mickey and the gang were added to the mix. While Disney characters may seem contrary to everything else the show is trying to achieve, they're brought in at just the right moments so as not to upset the more historic aspects of the presentation.

It's been nearly 100 years since William Cody passed, but his spirit and the spirit of the Wild West he loved so much are alive and well today at Disneyland Resort Paris.

Village People and Places

Nearly everything at Disneyland Resort Paris is within walking distance, and connecting the parks with the resorts and the rail station is Disney Village. This shopping, dining and entertainment complex was designed by noted architect Frank Gehry and originally opened as Festival Disney, but the area was renamed in 1996 to give it more appeal as a gathering spot for Guests after a day in the theme parks.

Similar to the Downtown Disney districts at other Disney resorts, Disney Village features a mix of Disney-branded locations with operating participants such as Starbucks, McDonald's and Earl of Sandwich.

There are also several themed dining establishments such as Rainforest Cafe, Planet Hollywood and the Bavarian-inspired King Ludwig's Castle.

You can also catch a movie at Disney Village, at the 15 screen Gaumont Cinema (avec Imax). While we didn't spend valuable time in Paris watching American movies, I did find it very entertaining to see how certain releases had been retitled for ease of translation overseas. Perhaps there's not a word in French for "hangover?"

The bit of construction you see to the right of the cinema in the above photo is the future home of Paris's own World of Disney, set to open in 2012. For now, Guests can get their Disneyland Paris souvenir fix at the Disney Store and several other character shops along the avenue.

Inside the Disney Store are large character vignettes, much like those found in the mall-based Disney Stores of the '90s. Here, you'll see the characters visiting Disneyland Resort Paris landmarks, such as Le Chateau de la Belle au Bois Dormant or Walt Disney Studios Park.

You'll also find a veritable cornucopia of Disney character stars floating and flying above the center of the massive store. There's Launchpad McQuack, Kit Cloudkicker and Baloo the bear from TaleSpin, along with my favorite, Professor Ludwig Von Drake, piloting a hot air balloon.

Many of the establishments at Disney Village have changed over the years, but one of the originals is still among the best. Annette's Diner, named in tribute to everyone's favorite Mouseketeer, is a simple pleasure. It's a throwback to another era, with burgers and shakes, carhops, Googie architecture and fun music.

Annette's isn't the only thing that remains from Day One at Disney Village. Here and there around the resort, you'll also occasionally come across something like this: One of the few vestiges of the original name of Disneyland Resort Paris, Euro Disney.

Way down at the other end of Disney Village is a relative newcomer on the scene, Panoramagique. This tethered balloon attraction (operated by the same company that runs Characters in Flight at Walt Disney World) takes off from a setting that looks like it would be right at home between Main Street and Discoveryland. That's appropriate, I suppose, since you can sometimes see the balloon from those areas of the park.

What's great about Panoramagique, though, is the view you get from the balloon itself. It's a spectacular panorama of Disney Village, Lake Disney and the parks and resort areas of Disneyland Paris. Check it out for yourself in the video below from DLRP Magic.

Mysteries of the Nautilus

As we conclude our visit to Discoveryland, let's go back to the visionary who started it all, Jules Verne. Among his greatest works is "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea," which inspired one of the greatest Disney adventure films, along with several Disney Parks attractions. In fact, an early Tomorrowland attraction at Disneyland was a walk-through exhibit of sets and props from the making of the 1954 movie.

Added to Discoveryland in 1994 as part of the park's first significant expansion, Les Mysteres du Nautilus invites Guests to step down into the might submersible and explore the world of Captain Nemo.

This self-guided walking tour passes through several chambers of the Nautilus, including the Captain's quarters, furnished in rich wood and occupied by a collection of artifacts from his worldly travels.

Our adventure also carries us past the engine room and the air lock, where divers come and go from the Nautilus on their missions of exploration beneath the sea.

The charts room is filled with maps and devices to aid in navigation. There's even a map of Nemo's secret island stronghold, Vulcania. Spiral staircases in this room, while inaccessible to Guests, appear to lead up to the bridge. You can almost imagine hearing the Captain shout to Mr. Baxter, "Steer clear the tottering columns!" (pronounced kol-yooms, of course)

Next up is the Grand Salon. Here and in other chambers of the Nautilus, many of the props you see are genuine antiques, including books and maps dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries. Having real items like this adds to the believability of each scene.

At the far end of the Grand Salon is Captain Nemo's massive pipe organ, designed to replicate the one seen in the film. The original organ from the movie was part of the attraction at Disneyland until 1967, when it was moved to the ballroom scene in the then-under-construction Haunted Mansion. You can still see it there today.

The organ in the Grand Salon of Les Mysteres du Nautilus is somewhat haunted itself. As the instrument steams through Bach's "Toccata and Fugue in D Minor," the face of the Captain appears in the mirror above the keys.

The real thrill of this attraction, though, comes when the iris of the observation window slides open to reveal the Nautilus under attack by a giant squid. The creature grabs hold of us with its suckers, pulling us toward its snapping jaws, until the sub's electrical defense system kicks in and wards it off.

Safe from the threat (for now), we decide to return topside to continue our day at Disneyland Paris... but not before appreciating one last detail. The exit turnstile for Les Mysteres du Nautilus continues the nautical story line right to the very end.

Blast to the Discoveryland Past

Near the exit to Star Tours in Disneyland Paris is the Star Traders shop, housed within a sort of Rebel base station crowned with an antenna for communicating with fellow Alliance groups across the galaxy. While the Star Wars references are just as relevant today as they were when they were added in 1992, there are other elements in this corner of Discoveryland which definitely provide a blast to the past.

Step inside Star Traders, for example, and you'll discover a sculpted tableau at the center of the store comprised of futuristic mannequins and... the Mighty Ducks? Yep. This '90s staple of Disney films and sports enterprises is alive and well here, in the form of Donald and his nephews playing a "space age" game of ice hockey.

Next door, there's a flashback to the 1980s with the Michael Jackson 3-D extravaganza, "Captain EO." Over the past couple of years, "Captain EO" has made a nostalgic return to the four Disney Parks around the world the show once called home (it was never presented in Hong Kong Disneyland). Here, though, sharp-eyed visitors can still spy remnants of the theater's previous tenant, "Honey I Shrunk the Audience."

The flying lightbulb was a symbol of the Imagination Institute, the setting for that 3-D film. Outside "Captain EO," you can still find this topiary of the flying lightbulb, as well as the device pictured below. When the disc near the base is spun, an illusion of animation is created... animation of a bouncing, flying lightbulb.

During my visit, not only was Orbitron closed for refurbishment, but the entire attraction had been removed preventing any picture taking.)

May Le Force Be with Vous

Elsewhere in Discoveryland, we're presented a vision of the future by George Lucas with Star Tours. An X-wing fighter is poised for take-off just outside the Starport, where a fleet of Starspeeder 3000s await to take us anywhere in the galaxy.

The detailing around the entrance to the Starport is straight out of the Star Wars universe, specifically the original trilogy (the only Star Wars films there were when this attraction was built back in '92). From the "used technology" look of the signs and columns to the Jabba's barge-like sails shading the Fastpass distribution area, an atmosphere is created that transports you to that galaxy far, far away.

Here in Disneyland Paris, it's not just the film references that are original. The attraction itself is the original version of Star Tours, with Captain Rex in the cockpit for your trip to the moon of Endor. While the U.S. Disney Parks updated their Star Tours attractions in the past year, the international parks have not yet taken that step.

Once inside the Starport, there are unique elements only found in Paris, such as the planetary chart (above). There are also plenty of familiar sights, like the StarSpeeder maintenance bay with C-3PO (voiced by Anthony Daniels speaking French) and R2-D2, hard at work on a heavily battle-scarred ship (In Star Tours: The Adventures Continue, this scene features an earlier-generation StarSpeeder 1000 in brand new condition).

Next up is the Droidnostics Center, a robot repair room where the baggage services scene is found in the newer versions of the attraction. Look closely amongst the junk these droids are sorting through, and you may spot some remnants of Imperial Speeder Bikes, actual movie props from Return of the Jedi.

Next, it's "Welcome aboard," and we're on our way to the Endor moon without any further delay.

Okay... with Rex at the controls, things do go "horribly wrong," but we soon find ourselves docked at L'Astroport: Services Interstellaires. This interplanetary rest stop serves as a post-show of sorts to the Star Tours experience.

You're welcomed at the information booth by RXN. You can call her Roxanne. She invites everyone to stay a while, offering tips on what to do during your visit. In all honesty, there's not much to do here. Beyond these details, L'Astroport is a fairly standard video game arcade.

One last fun thing to look for on your way out, though, is cases like this. Looks like someone's luggage from our flight that maybe fell out of the ship's hold during battle!

To Discoveryland... and Beyond!

Not all the futuristic elements of Discoveryland come from the science fiction of the past. In the case of Buzz Lightyear Laser Blast (the name is different in Paris, allowing for easier translations), the inspiration is fairly contemporary. In fact, Disneyland Paris was the last of the parks to receive the popular Buzz Lightyear attraction, replacing the former Le Visionarium (the original Timekeeper CircleVision production) with the ride in 2006.

The oversize toy elements, which have become a trademark of the Toy Story-based attractions, are in full effect here. Before you even enter the building, you discover the Fastpass distribution location is actually a charging station. Banks of batteries are placed in chargers and actually plugged in to overhead outlets.

Inside, the toy aesthetic continues with details like a 2-way radio and foldout instruction sheets used to tell the story of the attraction. I particularly enjoy seeing familiar expressions, like "Aim for the Zs," conveyed in French. Since French and English aren't the only languages spoken here, though, some of the key story points must be communicated visually. Passing through the queue, "windows" into other chambers of Star Command Headquarters show us a robot attack in progress and LGMs demonstrating how to use the Astro Blasters.

A giant Wanted poster lets us know Emperor Zurg is "Galactic Enemy #1." Zurg is a more subtle presence, too. Check out the Lite-Brite panels, giving the impression of a couple familiar faces.

Enough playing with toys! We have a mission to get to! In the next room Buzz Lightyear himself relays the details of the plan... by Etch A Sketch, of course.

Once we've been briefed, it's off to the hangar to board our XP-41 Space Cruisers bound for Planet Z. Heading down the corridor, there are windows to the left and right. Some (actual) windows open onto the hangar bay, while others (painted murals) offer views of a neighboring space station - one that bears more than a passing resemblance to a certain mountain.

Our mission is a success, as we defeat the robots and stop Zurg just before he arrives at the Green Planet. Along the way, if you weren't too caught up in the action, you may have noticed a couple bits of Hidden Disney. In the Robot Attack scene, sharp-eyed riders can spot 9-Eye from Timekeeper near the Box-O-Bot, and here in the finale, take a look at the brand name on that wrench. It's a Binford Tool, a nod to the voice of Buzz Lightyear, Tim Allen, and his 1990s TV series, "Home Improvement."

In the end, the Green Planet and the rest of the universe are saved, and Zurg gets returned to the store! Naturally, a store is our final destination. The Constellations shop at the exit of the attraction offers fairly standard merchandise, but it also has a nice star field ceiling and one of the most clever fixtures you'll find anywhere - a Vendobot.

In Space Mountain, Everyone Can Hear You Scream

Discoveryland at Disneyland Paris draws inspiration from the futuristic predictions of several visionaries of the past, but none more so than Frenchman Jules Verne. Standing majestically at the center of the land is Space Mountain, based on Verne's 1865 novel, "From the Earth to the Moon."

Space Mountain: De la Terre à la Lune opened in 1995 and introduced two major "firsts" for Disney Parks coasters. It was the first to include multiple inversions and the first to feature synchronized on-board audio. In 2005, the attraction was updated to Space Mountain: Mission 2, taking Guests beyond the Moon to the far reaches of the universe with all new special effects and a new soundtrack composed by Michael Giacchino.

Although the story of Space Mountain has expanded over the years, many of the details remain the same. In fact, in some places throughout the queue you can still see emblems with the initials "DM" for Discovery Mountain, the name intended for the attraction until right before it opened.

In Verne's story "De la Terre à la Lune," representatives from the Baltimore Gun Club build an enormous cannon to launch themselves from the Earth to the Moon. The cannon itself, named "Columbiad," is a major architectural element of Space Mountain, extending more than 70 feet along the exterior of the structure. The detailing on "Columbiad" is magnificent... and so is the scale. To give you an idea, an average size person would only stand eye-level with the words "Gun Club" on the side of the base. High above and resplendent in gold is Columbia herself, a feminine personification of the United States, her arrow poised to shoot for the stars.

The main hall of the Baltimore Gun Club is where we board the rocket for our mission to outer space. Our goal is the future, but the setting is firmly in the Victorian past, contained within a massive, riveted iron structure.

Our rocket rolls into place in the barrel of "Columbiad," and we wait breathlessly for launch. A puff of smoke, a thrust of energy and we're off!

We blast up and into Space Mountain, past the Moon toward encounters with a comet and an asteroid field. Ultimately, we reach the supernova that is our destination, only to have it explode before our eyes. In a flash of red, a hypergate opens a shortcut for our safe return to Earth, where we might be inspired to pursue other adventures in Discoveryland.

All Aboard the Hyperion

Flanking the northern border of Discoveryland is an enormous hangar for dirigibles and other forms of retro-futuristic transportation, and poised there in the largest bay, ready for liftoff, is the spectacular airship Hyperion. Inspired by the 1974 Disney film The Island at the Top of the World, Hyperion gets its name from both the Greek god of light and the street on which Walt Disney had one of his early animation studios.

Not coincidentally, the dramatic sight of the Hyperion emerging from a hangar had also once been included in concept art by Imagineer Tony Baxter for Discovery Bay, a new land proposed for Disneyland in California. Discovery Bay never got off the drawing boards, but when Tony became executive producer of Disneyland Paris, the idea finally found a home.

As amazing as the first view of the Hyperion is, the treasure is really in the details. It's a perfect example of how Imagineering uses long shots, medium shots and close-ups to tell stories. The closer you get to the airship, the more details are revealed. My favorite: the crates of "live" pigeons for delivering messages from the ship by air mail.

The story of this space as a transportation hub for Discoveryland continues as you step inside. Set into the floor of the atrium lobby is a beautiful, marble compass rose. Of course, this is France, so instead of a "W" for west there's an "O" for oest (the French spelling)!

In the world of the theme park, the area just inside the hangar entrance is the Cafe Hyperion, a quick service restaurant. According to our story, though, this is the counter where Guests would book passage to exotic points around the globe. A gorgeously illustrated world map hangs overhead, coupled with elaborate bronze and gold Victorian-style detailing on the walls and fixtures.

Cafe Hyperion is a Steampunk fan's dream! Even objects an potentially mundane as clock faces and vending machines are given an over-the-top, mechanical design to help them fit into the environment.

Beyond Cafe Hyperion, the largest part of the hangar is given over to the Videopolis Theatre. Over the years, the name Videopolis has been applied to an outdoor dance club in Fantasyland at Disneyland and an indoor nightclub on Pleasure Island at Walt Disney World. Here, it's been home to such productions as "Rock Shock" and "The Legend of the Lion King." Today, Guests may dine in the theater while enjoying Disney animated cartoons on several large screens.

Rounding out the theater are Arcade Alpha and Beta, typical video game centers that offer a quick diversion before embarking on your next journey of discovery.

The Highway of Tomorrow

Autopia in Discoveryland at Disneyland Paris is retro futuristic in more ways than one. For starters, the attraction traces its roots all the way back to the beginning of Disneyland in 1955. In fact, the chassis of these cars are essentially the same as the ones designed by Bob Gurr for the original park.

Even though Autopia-style attractions can be found in all the Disneyland parks around the world, each one is a bit different. Here, in keeping with the theme of Discoveryland, Autopia's designers looked back at visions of the future predicted in "Popular Science" magazines of the 1930s, as well as Disney's 1958 TV featurette "Magic Highway USA."

The Art Deco style of the 1930s combines with the Googie influence of the '50s in the design of Autopia's queue and load structures, bridges and even the cars themselves. Each of the 60 Autopia vehicles deployed in Paris is unique, offering various combinations of body parts, accents and paint schemes. Young drivers can snap a picture behind the wheel of a car positioned out front, or buckle up and take one for a spin.

Autopia derives its name from the words "Auto" and "Utopia." It's the perfect world for motoring, where there's never any traffic and no one bumps the car ahead (okay, so it's almost perfect).

Along the highways of Discoveryland, Autopia drivers encounter a series of fantastic billboards, done very much in the style of "Popular Science." These ads help reinforce the story and create a sense of place, promoting everything from flying cars to the new city of Solaria, where it's always summer.

My favorite is the Robot Maid (above). The ad claims "Cleanliness at Your Fingertips." Check out "Today's Woman," operating her RoboPropre by remote control as she enjoys her coffee and some light reading. That's the life!

One of the best parts of Autopia is, just like the future, you never know where each turn may take you. It's a twisting, turning adventure full of plenty of retro fun!

A Great Big Retro Tomorrow

One of the greatest challenges the traditional Disneyland-style parks have faced has been the issue of Tomorrowland. Practically from the moment Walt opened the doors in 1955, the future was arriving so quickly, Tomorrowland couldn't keep up. With the creation of Disneyland Paris in 1992, the Imagineers set out to try and solve that problem. Instead of building a land that would attempt to predict the future, they set their sights on futuristic ideas of the past. As a result, Discoveryland is timeless, mixing together elements from such diverse science fiction visionaries as Leonardo Da Vinci, Jules Verne, H.G. Wells and even George Lucas.

The entrance to Discoveryland is dramatic and otherworldly, punctuated by crystalline rock formations that seem to have been forced out of the earth by some unseen energy.

Discoveryland is clearly a place dedicated to bold ideas about the future, but it's also presented as a place with tremendous history. The rocks suggest an ancient geological past, while bas relief sculptures on the sides of certain buildings hint at more of the region's richness. This sculpt, on the exterior of the Constellations gift shop, depicts various forms of Discoveryland transportation from dirigibles and Flash Gordon rocket ships to the Nautilus and a Starspeeder 3000.

New forms of science fiction have also been added to the tapestry over time, such as this photo op of WALL*E and Eve, placed alongside Space Mountain.

What helps Discoveryland work so beautifully is that even with the outlandish combination of sci-fi mythologies, so many things are based in the real and familiar. Landscaping plays a big part of that, too. Trees and plants naturally help an area feel comfortable, but here, the plants chosen each possess a bit of a futuristic or alien quality. Some of my favorites are the monkey puzzle trees. You can spot a couple in the upper left of the image below. They're so unusual and rarely seen... although they've existed on Earth since the days of the dinosaurs.

With all the diversity found in Discoveryland, the vision and aesthetic of Frenchman Jules Verne dominates much of the area. It's fitting then that a plaque emblazoned with a quote from Verne be placed at the center of the Court of Flags in the heart of Discoveryland. It reads: "Tout ce que est dans la limite du possible doit etre et sera accompli." ("All that is within the limits of the possible must be done and will be.")

Adventure or Bust!

One of my favorite aspects of Mickey's Jammin' Jungle Parade at Disney's Animal Kingdom is the Adventure Rovers for each of the VIP characters in the show. These customized Jeeps are not only personalized for each character, but are also packed to the gills with everything they "need" for a camping expedition.

Minnie's Rover, complete with bow and polka dots, is hauling a pair of picnic baskets, along with all the comforts a lady like Minnie would never leave home without. Look for hatboxes and trunks (adorned with stickers from Minnie's travels through Disney's Animal Kingdom), a vanity table and phonograph... even a bathtub with rubber (Donald) duckie, leaving a trail of bubbles as she goes.

Goofy's up next, and he's brought everything... including the kitchen sink! There's a fishing pole, lantern, snowshoes (just in case), golf clubs, tennis racket, tent, radio, pots, pans, broom, washboard, tea kettle, long johns, windsock, barbecue grill and more. The hood ornament on Goofy's Rover is an old bowling trophy, which occasionally tips back as the engine overheats and needs to blow off steam. Look closely at the hood of the Jeep... you'll see the Goof really is prepared for anything! That's the Flying Carpet and lamp from Aladdin. You never know what kind of wish you may need granting when you're lost in the jungle!

A beak leads Donald Duck's Adventure Rover, fully equipped for aquatic fun on this jungle expedition. He's got SCUBA gear, a raft, nets, paddles, inner tubes, an old-fashioned dive helmet, water skis and even a crow's nest (complete with crow). Donald's sailboat has seen better days, but he's patched it up and is ready to go!

Mickey Mouse brings up the rear of the parade with the largest Adventure Rover of them all. Leave it to the Big Cheese, though, to be the most sensible and frugal of packers. He's loaded up with just the things he truly needs - clothes, sleeping bag, supplies and some satellite radio equipment to keep in touch with his pals - allowing plenty of room for extra Guests to ride along.

Mickey's Rover is also completely inclusive. Rather than celebrating himself, it's a tribute to various members of the animal kingdom, from the golden lion hood ornament to the paint scheme in patterns of zebra, tiger, snake, lizard and insect. It's as if all the animals of the entire parade come together for the finale, rejoicing in the "Rhythm of One."

Art + Animals = Artimals!

In yesterday's article, we talked about some of the elements which make up Mickey's Jammin' Jungle Parade at Disney's Animal Kingdom. Today, let's take a closer look at the artistry involved in depicting the wild animals throughout the parade.

The rickshaw taxis that carry Grand Marshall Guests are each comprised of a tree canopy carriage, "pulled" by a different animal. I particularly like the leaping tiger (above) and the crocodile (below). Notice, even the type of tree is different on each unit.

The drum units are equally unique, with performers sitting high on a camel or nestled into the back of a giant parrot. Look closely, and you'll realize these creatures are made to look as though they were hand-crafted from natural elements, like leaves, branches and tree trunks.

This aesthetic, combining natural-looking elements with vibrant colors, carries through the parade. It's similar to the way depictions of animals are treated in the rest of Discovery Island, where the animals are shown very realistically on the Tree of Life but interpreted artistically in human creations.

Another key design choice for Mickey's Jammin' Jungle Parade was influenced by the overarching theme of Disney's Animal Kingdom - people's relationship with the animal world. As much as the park is about animals, it's also about us. Supporting that idea, the parade performers are not hidden by the animal puppets or costumes. Instead, their faces are integral to the design, and they bring the performance of the animal to life with their expression and direct connection to the audience.

In no instance is that connection more direct than with the Party Animals, stilt walkers who have the ability to stride on over to a Guest along the route and interact. From a distance, we appreciate the artistry that turns a performer into a colorful moose, eagle, lizard, armadillo or lion. Up close, though, we realize they're just like us... human beings caught up in a rapturous celebration of the natural world.

Jammin in the Jungle

As some of you may be aware, I recently joined the team of contributors on the official Disney Parks Blog. My first post there, which went up earlier this month, celebrated the 10th anniversary of Mickey's Jammin' Jungle Parade at Disney's Animal Kingdom. Taking another look at the parade after all these years gave me new appreciation for the details and craftsmanship found throughout the show.

Rafiki leads the way on this Jammin' Jungle Expedition through the Discovery Island section of the park. His Adventure Rover, like those carrying each of the featured characters, is a highly-customized Jeep with lots of fun details, from the Anandapur stickers on the luggage to the vanity plate on the back of the vehicle.

The original procession which debuted with the park in 1998 was entitled March of the ARTimals. Following that rather esoteric display, one of the key goals for Mickey's Jammin' Jungle Parade was to introduce more Disney DNA and characters into the park. The show definitely maintains its own identity, though, unique to Disney's Animal Kingdom.

The parade becomes a celebration of animals, with designs inspired by the color and craftsmanship of the Discovery Island villagers. The Party Animals (stilt walkers) each give the impression of a distinct species, such as the tiger and crocodile pictured above, without being literal translations.

Larger creatures, like the elephant and giraffe below, are suggested by the forms of giant rolling drum units and elaborate puppet contraptions. The puppets for the parade were created in partnership with Michael Curry, the designer who produced the pieces for "The Lion King" on Broadway. That same type of artistry is in evidence here.

One of the most special aspects of Mickey's Jammin' Jungle Parade is the level of Guest involvement. Rather than a single Grand Marshall family, several groups of Guests get to ride along and join in the celebration throughout the parade. Some of the VIP Guests are carried in spectacular rickshaw taxis, which are among my favorite elements of the show. In the example below, the carriage for the Guests is formed by a series of canopy trees and their root system, while out front the whole works is pulled along by a depiction of a hippopotamus. Even the performer/driver gets into the act, dressed as an oxpecker bird on the back of the hippo!

It's a Different World after All

One of the things I love about visiting the various Disney Parks around the world is appreciating how different each of them is, even when it comes to classic attractions they all share. It's a Small World in Disneyland Paris is a great example of this. It's essentially the same experience, but there are so many elements of the French version that make it unique.

Out front, the boat full of children is represented dimensionally, atop a partial globe with water cascading over its surface. The exterior of the building is a palace facade, like all the others except Magic Kingdom. Here, though, European landmarks are more prominent in the design and the color palette is brighter (to help overcome the often-grey skies in Paris) and is accented in copper and gold (helping ease the transition between Fantasyland to the building's left and Discoveryland to the right).

The queue and load/unload station for the boats is positioned outside the main building, just as it is at Disneyland in Anaheim. To protect from the weather, those areas are all covered here, but not so enclosed that you can't enjoy the beauty of the facade or the charming joy of the clock tower when it animates every quarter hour.

Once aboard "The Happiest Cruise That Ever Sailed," that familiar Sherman Brothers tune kicks in, and you're off on a journey around the world. Although heavily influenced by the work done on the original It's a Small World by Mary Blair, Alice Davis and others, the designs here step boldly out of the 1960s and feel completely contemporary.

Many of the sets are still painted flats, but they're painted with areas of light and shadow, giving the impression of added depth and richness.

When It's a Small World opened in Hong Kong Disneyland in 2005, it was the first to include Disney characters among the dolls and toys (they have also since been added to the Disneyland original). The Paris version of the attraction provided the stepping stone to that idea, by introducing the idea of representing characters from stories and mythology. Floating past the scenes, look for a genie, a mermaid, a baby Pegasus and the Loch Ness Monster.

Disneyland Paris was also the first time an entire room was dedicated to North America, with entire scenes of Canada, the American West and the prairie.

There's even a bit of the modern U.S., as New York City, San Francisco and Hollywood come together just ahead of the attraction's big finale.

Although it's a Disney Parks standard (and frankly a bit of a cliche these days), It's a Small World turned out to be one of my favorite attraction experiences in all of Disneyland Paris. It's at once familiar and completely original... and forever charming!

They Call It Bella Notte

On the outskirts of Fantasyland at Disneyland Paris is an unassuming cluster of buildings that brings a bit of Italian flair to the stretch between Sleeping Beauty Castle and It's a Small World. This is Pizzeria Bella Notte, a structure which looks as though it has stood several centuries (instead of just two decades), all thanks to the Imagineering art of character painting.

Pizzeria Bella Notte is dominated by an open courtyard for dining, complete with marble sculpture and a beautiful tile mosaic floor. Legend has it some of the pieces of tile here came from one of Mary Blair's murals done for Tomorrowland at Disneyland in 1967.

The exterior is classic Italian, even to the point that one of the facades seems to be listing a bit on an ancient foundation.

Step inside, though, and the decor transitions a bit from realistic to more exaggerated and "cartoonish."

Here is where you'll also come across references to the Disney film from which the restaurant gets its name, Lady and the Tramp. Famous Italian restaurateurs Tony and Joe are immortalized in stone columns, as well as frescoes recounting that "lovely bella notte" when Butch fell in love with the "cockerel-Spanish girl."

Between Pizzeria Bella Notte and the Castle Stage is another fun little corner. An ancient-looking stone facade creates a transition, bridging the looks of Italy and a medieval fairytale castle. The structure itself isn't much, but it does house restrooms. Regular readers of this blog know that one of my favorite Disney details is custom restroom signs, and this spot doesn't disappoint. The identifiers for men and women are painted on the stone walls, using the likenesses of Aurora's parents, the king and queen from Sleeping Beauty.

Storybook Land

Disneyland Paris is the only other Disney Park in the world (after Disneyland) to include Casey Jr. and Storybook Land Canal Boats, here known as Le Pays des Contes de Fées (literally translated: Fairytale Country). The attractions were added to Paris in 1994 as part of a program to increase the park's capacity with small attractions that could be completed quickly and with limited investment. The investment paid off, though, by creating one of the most charming corners of the park.

Le Pays des Contes de Fées is similar to Storybook Land Canal Boats at Disneyland, in that Guests board colorful watercraft named for Disney characters (Ariel, Aurora, etc.) and float past miniature scenes from famous stories. The attraction in France is quite different, though. For starters, boats are boarded from a rotating platform and then propelled mechanically along the waterway with no pilot on board. With no one operating the boat, that means there's also no narration. Language gets tricky at Disneyland Paris, where Guests visit from all over Europe. Instead, the stories are communicated through storybook graphics (in French and English), as well as iconic musical themes.

The first tune we hear as our boat passes through the portal into Le Pays des Contes de Fées is "Heigh Ho," from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The mine is built into the side of the mountain, and if you look closely, you'll even spot Dopey. Nearby is the cottage of the seven dwarfs, and it looks like an unwelcome visitor is making a hasty exit.

Classic Disney stories abound, as we float past Prince Eric's castle from The Little Mermaid (where Eric's on the balcony, pining for the girl with the amazing voice) and the French provincial village from Beauty and the Beast (complete with Belle reading to the sheep at the fountain). There's even Maurice's cottage and, high on the hilltop, the castle of the Beast.

Le Pays des Contes de Fées has been kept up to date, too, with the recent addition of Rapunzel's tower from Tangled. A tower representing the Rapunzel story had been part of the attraction from the beginning, but that was replaced last year with this model from the film... along with the figure of Flynn Rider climbing the golden hair.

Le Pays des Contes de Fées is not all princess stories. There's actually a great mix here, including this tribute to Aladdin. In the spirit of Monstro's agape mouth on the original attraction, here boats drift into the Cave of Wonders. Inside, we're warned to "touch nothing but the lamp." Too bad Abu so easily gives in to temptation!

Making it out the other side of the cave, we come upon a tiny but effective scene of a sword cast into a stone and anvil. Bits of magic fall down upon Excalibur, as we're reminded of the moment in The Sword in the Stone when young Arthur surprises everyone (except Merlin) and becomes king.

The Sword in the Stone isn't the only unexpected entry in Le Pays des Contes de Fées. There are several scenes from stories not included in the American version, but chosen here to represent a broader spectrum of European culture.

Look for scenes from Disney's 1937 short film "The Old Mill," "Peter and the Wolf" from the 1946 animated feature Make Mine Music, and the "Pastoral" sequence and "Night on Bald Mountain" from Fantasia.

There are even truly obscure scenes not typically associated with Disney at all, such as the old witch's candy cottage from "Hansel and Gretel," a story made into a Walt Disney record album and Mickey and Minnie TV short.

Ultimately, the grand finale of Le Pays des Contes de Fées leads us to... the Emerald City? Walt Disney held the rights to some of the Oz books for a period and even toyed with making an animated film of the stories. In 1985, Disney released the live action Return to Oz, and another film, Oz: the Great and Powerful, is in production now for a 2013 release.

In the end, all the stories - well-known and otherwise - come together in harmony to create a perfectly enjoyable experience where everyone lives "Happily Ever After!"

Dumbo the Great!

Although Walt Disney's Dumbo took place in America (Florida, to be exact), the circus traces its origins to Europe, so its fitting that Dumbo occupy such a prominent place in Fantasyland at Disneyland Paris. Here the gaudy, gilded calliope of Dumbo the Flying Elephant rises above the gardens in the center of the land, amid lush landscaping and water features.

The attraction experience on Dumbo the Flying Elephant is very much the same as it is in the other Disney Parks, but there are some unique elements to the presentation in Paris. Along the queue are graphics reminding us of Dumbo's story and his ascent to greatness. Once on the platform, the operator control booth is dressed as an ornate circus wagon, touting "The 9th Wonder of the World!"

Dumbo received an expanded presence in the Disneyland Paris park in 1993 when, as part of an effort to boost capacity, small attractions were added to every land. In the case of Fantasyland, a tunnel was carved beneath the railroad tracks, opening up a cul de sac for the inclusion of Storybook Land and Casey Jr.

Guests travel below the trestle and through the woods, past banners touting the wonders of the circus, before arriving at the tiny station where they'll board the little train that could.

Casey Jr. - le Petit Train du Cirque is a powered coaster-type attraction (as opposed to a traditional, gravity coaster). Similar to its counterpart at Disneyland, Casey Jr. offers an opportunity to ride in a variety of circus train cars, from gilded chariots to animal cages. The designs have been updated a bit, of course, from the 1955 originals.

"All aboard! Let's go!"

Casey Jr. provides a zippy tour of the countryside around and above Storybook Land, where miniature versions of fairytale landmarks can be found. These have been updated for the Paris version, too, with inclusions such as the Beast's castle from Beauty and the Beast (below). Just as in California, though, you can get a much better look at all that from the comfort of a canal boat. We'll be taking that trip tomorrow!

Somewhere in Particular

Complementing the British corner of Fantasyland at Disneyland Paris, between Alice in Wonderland and Peter Pan, is Toad Hall Restaurant. Here, rather than rollick along on a wild ride with J. Thaddeus, we can actually visit his residence and spend time getting to know him.

The plaque above the entrance, similar in some respects to one found above Mr. Toad's Wild Ride at Disneyland, here is customized for the restaurant setting... including the Latin directive, "No Consumus Froglagus."

Look up before stepping inside, you'll notice custom weather vanes, depicting Toady on a unicycle or at the wheel of a motorcar.

In fact, it quickly becomes obvious that the design of Toad Hall is very much about Toad himself. He's worked his likeness into every nook and cranny, from obvious points like this bust to more subtle details like the bas relief along the roofline.

Once inside, all subtlety goes out the window. A prominent portrait of Toad hangs in the foyer, leading to the various rooms of the mansion.

The Trophy Room is particularly fun, with paintings depicting Toad engaged in everything from tiger hunting to fox hunting... or fox jumping, as it were. He seems to have missed the fox entirely, getting wrapped up in the thrill of the hunt. I especially love the suit of armor here, custom made to toad proportions.

Not to say that Mr. Toad is completely self-centered. There are tributes to his dear friends, Rat and Mole. They're sculpted into the supports of the fireplace and featured in a painting on the side wall. Of course, Toady's worked into the wallpaper right alongside them, always present.

The interests - some would say "manias" - of J. Thaddeus Toad are on display throughout Toad Hall. There are images of him boxing and golfing and climbing Mt. Everest.

His greatest mania of all, however... the one that nearly did him in... was his passion for motorcars. Ads for motorcars dominate one of the dining rooms of the restaurant. You can even find an advertisement for the Wolseley, the very model that caught Toad's eye.

It was in this room I had the fortune to dine on my recent visit to Toad Hall. The decor was fascinating, and every so often, it would change. That painting above the fireplace which looked like a Toady Van Gogh when we came in, was suddenly a Toady da Vinci and later a Rembrandt!

And what did we have, you may wonder? Why, fish and chips, of course! They even came served on Disney's own version of newsprint! It was quite good and the perfect spot to stop for lunch on our way to "nowhere in particular."

Curiouser and Curiouser

The Alice in Wonderland setting in Fantasyland continues with an attraction unique to Disneyland Paris, Alice's Curious Labyrinth. The park's designers wanted to include a walk-through maze for their European audience which would be fun and challenging, without being too difficult. Alice seemed a perfect fit.

You set out on your journey through Wonderland by following the White Rabbit into a walled garden. Suddenly, you're down the rabbit hole!

Entering the Tulgey Wood, signs aim to confuse visitors, sending you this way and that. Whichever way you choose, you're sure to encounter some of the charming characters from this part of Disney's 1951 animated film.

Next thing you know, you're caught up in a "jolly caucus race," following the hedge trail around and around in what feels like a never-ending series of circles, as the Dodo carries on in the center. Better keep running! You'll never get dry just standing around, you know! You'll never get on to the next part of the maze, either.

Whether the Caterpillar comes before or after the Caucus Race, I can't quite recall. Alice's Curious Labyrinth can do a number on your sense of place and direction! When you do encounter him, he's just as one might imagine - haughty and aloof and puffing away on his hooka, asking "Whooo R U?"

No matter which way you go in the maze, you're bound to run into the Cheshire Cat, whether along the "cat walk" or up in a tree. Careful following his direction, though. He's a sneaky one with that devilish grin.

Eventually, everyone finds themselves on the grounds of the Queen of Hearts' castle and at the entrance of yet another intricate maze. For those who've had enough at this point, there's an easy way out, but where's the fun in that?

The Queen's cards are busy painting the roses red, since they painted white roses by mistake. Step past them into the next maze, and it looks as though you're headed right for the castle. That couldn't be further from the truth. This portion of the labyrinth twists and turns and doubles back on itself so much, you think you'll never find the way out... and if you're not careful, you may run into the Queen herself, commanding her henchmen, "Off with their heads!"

With a little persistence, you'll finally make it to the Castle of the Queen (and the king... he's up there on the balcony).

The castle offers a bit of a reward for those who've come this far. Spiraling stairs lead to the upper levels, where a spectacular view of Fantasyland awaits.

Once you're done at the castle, it's an easy exit from Wonderland and back to Fantasyland to celebrate your Unbirthday (or just explore more of Disneyland Paris)!

The Home of the March Hare

Not far from Mad Hatter's Tea Cups in Fantasyland at Disneyland Paris is March Hare Refreshments. The offerings at this snack stand could easily be vended from a cart, but here we find a tiny cottage straight out of Alice in Wonderland. The crooked angles, from the chimney pipe to the windows, the thatched roof and the cartoonish bulge of the structure all serve to transport us down the rabbit hole into another world.

The tea party motif carries on here, as well. Teacups serve as lights to illuminate the sign in front of the shop, and in the seating area nearby is a giant teapot. Keep your eyes open. You may just spot the Dormouse, peeking his head out.

There are only a few tables adjacent to March Hare Refreshments... or are there? Just as in the film, the curious are rewarded with new discoveries. Step through this little gate, and you'll find a secret garden with plenty of lovely places to sit and enjoy your snack.

Just half a cup for me, if you don't mind.

Alice's Adventures in Fantasyland

Fantasyland at Disneyland Paris is a truly fantastic, fairytale environment. Although anchored by familiar attractions in a medieval village setting, a large part of the center of the land is dominated by a whimsical Wonderland garden with attractions inspired by Alice in Wonderland. The garden is lush with water features and topiary of swans, frogs and a giant caterpillar. Rising from this landscape like a beautiful greenhouse is the glass canopy roof of Mad Hatter's Tea Cups.

Underneath, the tea cups spin wildly below an array of paper party lanterns. The designs on the tea cups vary in each Disney Park where the attraction appears. Here, they're based on artwork created by Mary Blair during development of Disney's 1951 animated feature, Alice in Wonderland.

One unique aspect of the Paris version of the attraction, which I particularly love, is the Cast Member control console for the ride. It's made in the shape of a giant sugar bowl. How sweet!

Cottage of the Seven Dwarfs

The Snow White story in Fantasyland at Disneyland Paris continues in the shop next door to the attraction, La Chaumière des Sept Nains. The first portion of the store is inspired by the Queen's castle, with heavy stone work and carved columns that echo the look of the nearby queue. You may even notice the apple motif in the Gothic chandeliers here.

Step through the arches, and you'll enter the world of the seven dwarfs, beginning with this diminutive suit of armor.

Straight ahead is the cottage of the dwarfs themselves. It's a beautifully rendered "outdoor" environment that serves as a transition between the two distinct spaces of the shop. Look back, and you'll see the exterior of the Queen's castle. Ahead is the cottage, complete with thatched roof and heart shutters as seen in the 1937 animated feature.

The little wooden bridge crosses a stream toward the cottage, where you'll discover some of the forest animals helping Snow White with the laundry.

Inside the cottage are other details that further tell the story of the dwarfs. There are more reminders of the film, like the heavy candle chandelier and the seven little beds (holding plush of course; not sure how I ended up without a picture of them). Up in the rafters, you'll even spot a selection of mining tools. My favorite? The pickax with the sock on it!

Good vs Evil / Light vs Dark

One corner of Fantasyland at Disneyland Paris looks considerably more dark and menacing than the rest. This area, inspired by the Black Forest region of Germany, brings to life the Brothers Grimm tale of Snow White. Here, the attraction is known simply as Blanche Neige et les Sept Nains (Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs) and doesn't have the word "scary" in its title like it does in the States. Instead, the designers used visual clues to let Guests know they could be in for a fright.

Approaching the entrance, the marquee with the carved faces of Snow White & Co. is juxtaposed with sculpted skulls and ravens. Just overhead, the Queen peers down on us from her upstairs window.

As it is in the Snow White film, the attraction presents a contrast between dark and light. A warning about the Wicked Witch comes just before a stone column capped with images of playful squirrels from the woods. A beautiful stained glass chandelier, upon closer inspection, reveals images of a poison apple and a dagger piercing a heart.

The castle-like interior of the queue space is, for the most part, inviting. In one corner, though, is a scene of the Queen's dungeon, complete with her spell book and the box she gave the Huntsman.

Soon, a carriage approaches to take us into the boundless realm of the supernatural... (Wait. Sorry. Wrong attraction.)

The carved wooden benches which carry us on our journey with Snow White are each named for one of the seven little men. We step aboard and glide past a mural to enter the forest for the story. (Curiously, the mural depicts both the Queen and the Witch together.)

Again, the attraction experience is very similar to the other Snow White dark rides around the world. In the end, good triumphs over evil, and everyone lives happily ever after!
