We'll Keep a Light on for You

It was a decent drive for Walt Disney to come all the way down from the Studio or his home in Holmby Hills to Disneyland. During the construction of the park, he had a small apartment built into the upper floor of the Fire House, so he could spend the night in the park and be out to supervise its progress early the next morning.

After Disneyland opened, Walt and his family would often come down to stay in the apartment. Walt became known for his late night and early morning walks, when he would inspect every detail of his new playground. And the Disneyland Cast became accustomed to checking to see if the lights were on upstairs, indicating that Walt was in the park.

It's been more than four decades since Walt Disney walked the streets of Disneyland, but his spirit lives on here. As a way of saying "Walt is always with us," a light in the window of the Fire House apartment is perpetually lit. Be sure to make note of it next time you enter the original Magic Kingdom, and take a moment to say "Thank you."
