Shopping is another favorite pastime for visitors to Harambe, and the choices range from street vendors to elaborate boutiques. One of the finest is Mombasa Marketplace. The shop is owned and operated by one of Harambe's wealthiest citizens, whose residence is actually on the upper floor of the building.
The structure itself, known as Mkubwa House ("mkubwa" literally means "big"), has historical significance for the town. It served as the Governor's mansion during Harambe's colonial period. The new owners had the interior restored in the early '90s. Now, they have embarked on an architectural restoration effort for the exterior.
A look at the side of the house indicates not only the work that still needs to be done, but also evidence of how modern conveniences such as electricity and plumbing have been added over the years to this historic building.
Even though work might be taking place on the outside of the building, the proprietors want everyone to know they're open. A "Welcome" sign is posted on the door, and all anyone has to do is step inside to see that business is booming. Mombasa carries a broad assortment of some of the finest examples of African cultural art and craftsmanship, excellent souvenir choices for the most discriminating of travelers.
