Down to the Pier

This week, we wrap up our month-long salute to the 10th anniversary of Disney California Adventure with a visit to Paradise Pier, promising "Fun in the Sun for Everyone." This sunny seaside resort pays tribute to California's classic oceanfront amusement parks, from The Pike in Long Beach and Belmont Park in San Diego to Venice by the Sea and the Santa Monica Pier.

In the current re-imagining of Disney California Adventure, Paradise Pier is undergoing a dramatic facelift, applying an early-20th century Victorian grandeur to the scene. The first indications of this new look came with the 2008 addition of Toy Story Midway Mania. Between Victorian overdressing and an injection of classic Disney character motifs, Paradise Pier is looking better than ever.

Then again, Paradise Pier has always looked particularly striking at night, even in its original design. From the twinkling lights along the track of California Screamin' to the brilliant face of the Sun Wheel, the glow of nostalgia seemed to be at its brightest after dark.
